I have been looking on reddit, the nexus forums, and google searches and Im still confused. Im not the most computer savvy so I tend to be cautious before loading my computer with mods due to overdoing it on Cities:Skylines years ago and making a mess of things. Im the 50 year old guy that always gets accused of knowing just enough about computers to get myself in trouble. So, Im trying to be mindful and careful about setting this all up.:-) So, my first question is this: Do I need to install SKSE64 before adding mods such as SKYUI and other mods for atmosphere, battle, landscape, etc I noticed there is a Skyrim SKSE in my games library on Steam that was created in 2015, so Im assuming that is for Skyrim Vanilla. I have already installed Vortex and followed a couple of YouTube videos to get the directories set up, and Im pretty sure Ive done that correctly. And, if there is another threat that walks through this, I apologize for not finding it, and I would be grateful to be directed to it. Thanks in advance. And you only need skse64 if the mod requires it, like skyui. Thank you very much for the information level 1 2 points 25 days ago edited 25 days ago Not all mods require the Script Extender, but SkyUI does, along with a great many of the more technical mods out there like CACO, Path of Sorcery, and FudgyDuffs many SKSE plugins. Now that youre playing Special Edition, youll no longer be using the Steam Workshop: Bethesdas official mod platform for SSE is at bethesda.net. However, Nexus Mods has a much broader selection. The main complication as far as installing SKSE goes is the fact that some of its files have to be placed directly in your Skyrim folder, but Vortex and other mod managers only control the contents of the Data subfolder. Youll want to download SKSE64 directly from its website, at skse.silverlock.org. The latest version of the extender is version 2.0.17, and this matches with version 1.5.97 of the game. Skse64 And Vortex Update At SomeIn the event that we get a game update at some point in the future, the SKSE team will probably have a matching version released within 48 hours, but youll also need to wait for the authors of any SKSE-based mods to update for the new version. ![]() Skse64 And Vortex Zip Archive AndOnce youve downloaded SKSE64, extract the 7-Zip archive and move everything except the Data folder inside directly into your Skyrim folder - the src folder and the files starting with skse64 should be in the same place as SkyrimSE.exe. Youll want to make a desktop shortcut to skse64loader.exe: you should always use this to start Skyrim instead of launching through Steam. If youve set up Skyrim to only update when starting the game, then so long as you remember to load Steam before launching though SKSE, you can avoid accidental game updates that might break your mods. Zip this back up on its own, and give the new archive an informative name like SKSE64 Data - v2.0.17. You can now manually install the scripts through Vortex like a regular mod. Thank you for directing me to the silverlake.org site to download it, I was fumbling through Vortex trying to download it. Im going to try that now.:-) Thanks again. Original Poster 1 point 24 days ago Thanks again for the great info. I followed all the steps, but Im not sure what you mean by I can now manually install the scripts through Vortex. Do I need to do something with else with these files Thanks again for taking the time to help. Continue this thread level 2 1 point 24 days ago but Vortex and other mod managers only control the contents of the Data subfolder. Wrong, Vortex can install mods to the games root directory, as long as youre using hardlink deployment (the default with Skyrim). Vortex in addition now includes guided downloading and installation of SKSE64, even making sure youre downloading the correct file.
